What are dermatophytes and is it true they can pass from my pet to me and vice versa?

Listen

Dermatophytes are microbes that cause a superficial condition called ringworm. It has absolutely nothing to do with worms, as Kim Horne, a Veterinary Technician at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, explains: “it’s a superficial fungal infection of the skin.”

Horne says ringworm is highly contagious – easily passed from one animal to another, or picked up in a contaminated environment. Young cats, dogs, and even humans are most vulnerable. Your child could get it from your puppy or kitten. Fortunately, this fungal infection is highly treatable with oral and topical medications.
