What are dermatophytes and is it true they can pass from my pet to me and vice versa?
Dermatophytes are microbes that cause a superficial condition called ringworm. It has absolutely nothing to do with worms, as Kim Horne, a Veterinary Technician at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, explains: “it’s a superficial fungal infection of the skin.” Horne says ringworm is highly contagious – easily passed from one animal to another, or picked up in a contaminated environment. Young cats, dogs, and even humans are most vulnerable. Your child could get it from your puppy or kitten.
